I just saw an ad with the title "Retro is Back!" Which seems to be code for everything is old as hell, small as fuck, and for some reason carpet in the kitchen is retro...

Sadly no. But there is a small yard for relaxing.

I prefer old compartmentalized floor plans to the popular open floor plans of today.

When I was shopping and told the realtors that they looked at me like I was someone who drank kitten blood.

Retro/Hipster = shit. They (sellers in any market) are now allowed to sell us shit and have us buy it thinking it is cool and great and wonderful.

I also love the lone cabinet. Something used to be there, just not anymore.

Holy shit. My aunt had a sink like this up until about 10 years ago when she did an entire revamp.

You're right. "Retro" is code for "we haven't done fuck with this house over the years."

I hate this planet now. We used to have quality homes that required upkeep. Now we build homes, devices, tools, cars with all the quality of Detroit. <—-in which the answer to repaiting something is to let it rot/burn it down/ let it get stolen and collect insurance money or take a loan we don;t plan on repaying to buy it. American sucks now. I wish I could be more like my parents parents.

Yard large enough for dog*

I just worked at a house like this with all that crap. A coworker took the stove for his lake cabin. Old sinks that were wanted by the "Old house society" of the town, not sure if they ever came and got them, for some reason back then there were no shut off valves under sinks.

I will never again buy an old house.

Those sinks are actually in style again. But with, you know, counters and cabinets and other kitchen stuff in there too.

"We used to have quality homes that required upkeep."

You know, I love old houses, I own an old house, and I grew up fixing old houses, but I'm sorry, they're shit too. They have some really nice materials and details to them, but the frames and foundations were built crooked as hell by a bunch of drunks, with no building code, and no standards for how big beams, headers and floor joists need to be to not sag. I hate new homes for a lot of other reasons, but lets not over-romanticize how great old homes used to be.

Ah yes, the ever-evolving code words of the realtor. Terms like "cozy", "retro", "handyman special", "Just needs TLC", etc, should all be met with extreme skepticism. As bad as they look in pictures, they're usually much much worse in person. I think my wife and I looked at over 100 homes before I found one I could even work with. The things people do to their houses, is horrifying.

Fair point. But planned obsolescence seriously pisses me off.

Well that's understandable. Not wanting to see your sink full of dirty dishes from the front door, is equivalent of drinking kitten blood.

The trend that boggles my mind, is the replacing of kitchen cabinets with open shelves. Who the hell thought that was a good idea? I don't want to see a stack of old mixing bowls, and when I do need to use a mixing bowl, now I have to wash it again, because it's covered in freaking dust!

Yes, me too. I hate that every commercial building is covered in dryvit (fake stucco), it always looks ... OK, I guess, for a few years. Within a decade or so, it looks like a rain streaked piece of crap that needs to torn down.

Why the hell are they in style again? They're awful looking, and if memory serves me right, incredibly shallow.

If you integrate them into a properly designed kitchen, with some nice hardware, they can actually look really nice. They are very shallow though, no getting around that.

I have always hated that plaster crap. I am so used to brick buildings growing up in the south. I also despise the unpainted concrete they use for housing projects - reminds me of Iraq.

I loves me some brick. I also love a nice wood siding, or even hardy-board siding, real stucco, stone. Material with solidity, that's made to last (with proper maintenance, of course).

I just bought a house made in 50's. Sadly the kitchen has been renovated. I wish it would have looking like that.

On the plus side, at least the sink and doors & trim are pretty nice.

The lack of cabinets can also be seen as a plus, since that's less demolition you have to do when you redo the kitchen.

what even is this room??? No counter next to the sink? This is not a usable kitchen at all. are you supposed to take your dripping shit from the counter to the sink over the carpet? I am assuming there is some kind of counter behind the photographer.
